Tidal estuaries are complex environments. The intricate channels where fresh, brackish and saline waters mix form a unique habitat and significant coastal resource. Shaped by waves and currents, estuaries can change from tide to tide.
An understanding of both the sediment dynamics and hydrodynamics of an estuary is key to understanding how it works. In most cases, a detailed hydrodynamic model capable of resolving the tidal channels is required. The behaviour of the fine sand, mud and silt that comprise most estuaries require extra care and special modelling techniques.
