With increasing pressure for urban recreational space, waterfronts are becoming less industrial. Parks and urban pathways are being developed or restored in many centres, on rivers, lakes and oceans. Often, the shoreline needs to be secured so that the associated infrastructure is protected. These projects are most successful when the design works with the natural environment, whether it be rocky or sandy, with or without beaches.
Like natural shorelines, a good understanding of water levels, wave climate and sediment dynamics is paramount for waterfront projects, since storms, seasonal fluctuations and sea level rise control flooding and erosion. Coldwater, often working in conjunction with landscape architects and planners, has extensive experience in this field.
